Checking for the Old Exploding Turban Trick

Gee, I wonder if we're winning the hearts and minds battle with this guy in Afghanistan.

Unless he's a completely irrational idiot, then he'll understand the check. Same as all of us going through security at airports.

Oh, he understands it, but you can see the resentment.
And I think he resents having an occupying army in his country a hell of a lot more than when we go through airport security on the way to grandma's house.
But speaking of "completely irrational", how bright was it not to concentrate on Afghanistan till Osama was caught or killed? Too bad we yanked much of our force out of there for an unrelated war in Iraq. Most Americans I talk to would have appreciated some of that famous Bush resolve to avenge 9/11, instead of hijack it to get what the Neo-Cons wanted all along. That decision was disgraceful and idiotic. The only thing Osama regrets about President Bush is that he can't serve a third term.

Come on, for all you know all you can see is constipation or a simple squint. He might be resentful. Then again he might be grateful. Unless you're a mind reader, you can't know. That being the case, it's a cheap way to attempt to score a point.

I just put it on because I thought it was an interesting picture. What cheap point do you think I was trying to make? Did you automatically assume because I'm against the Iraq War I was against going after Osama in Afghanistan? Just because President Bush told you that's the same thing, doesn't make it true. So what cheap point was I trying to make? And by the way, saying a search by the military in Afghanistan was the "same" as us going through airport security was incredibly weak and an insult to our troops.

The cheap point is interpreting the photo in the most negative way in the absence of evidence. A reasonable, unbiased reaction to the picture is simply that it's just some guy undergoing a mildly inconvenient check. While the context is different, the mechanics are exactly the same as what one goes through at the airport. Thus to say my noticing this analogy (if it's even at the distance of analogy) is "incredibly weak and an insult to our troops" is bordering on the hysterical.

I might have missed with the humor in this piece - you're taking it way too seriously. I tried to suggest that with the title, "Checkling for the Old Exploding Turban Trick." For the sake of ending this let me agree that I do not really know what's in the guy's head. He seemed unhappy and resentful to me. If I'm reading into this guy's expression, I apologize to both you and frankly, to him as well.

The exploding turban bit was funny. I'm with you there.
