Wild Oats Bolts - Good Coffee People On Hawthorne Forlorn
Just last week the City Council was discussing Division Street in glowing terms, but the landscape is going to be changing. The New Seasons store at 1954 SE Division has apparently driven the Wild Oats at 30th and Division out of business. Their last day is February 18th. Remember when it was a Nature’s? I always wonder where the bucks for all these classy grocery stores come from. Have you been to the Whole Foods at 12th and Northwest Couch? What’s the overhead on a beast like that? There can't be enough well-off yuppies in the State to make all these places work.
If losing the Wild Oats grocery store location on Division isn’t unsettling enough for Southeast Portlanders, the Good Coffee People on Hawthorne has also closed. No backtalk - just the Silent Treatment.

Wild Oats had it coming. as a former employee, i had a nice job with Nature's, then an opportunity with the new Wild Oats in Gresham, but between lousy marketing of the new store and WO's horrible management practices, they drove away good employees and made success nearly impossible. the retail model was fine, the products were good, the opportunities were abundant -- but they just didn't seem to have a clue about employees. and that's the kind of thing that gets around: people heard about what kind of employer WO was, and decided the New Season's alternative was more attractive (not to mention to growth of Trader Joe's in town). i'm sorry for the loss of Nature's, but only sorry that this store's closing means a lot of good people lose their jobs. but i would expect nothing less of Wild Oats.
Dear t.a.,
Thanks for contributing. I just have nostalgia for the location, but if the WO management treated thie employees badly, that puts it in a different light.
