Breaking Up Is Hard To Do

It looks like the teenage puppy love Republicans have felt for President Bush is finally winding down. You remember the scenario: That cute, impressionable girl who fell for the reckless loser back in high school? You know the guy: mean, shallow, devious, and stupid. Her friends all hated him, her parents were inconsolable, but she just thought he was so cute: “Momma, he told me he was a godly man!”
The years roll on and she lavishes attention and praise on him: “Did you see how cute he looked in his blue shirt when he was telling us about Katrina? How about Iraq?” “Momma, he’s got such moral clarity and resolve! Why, I do believe this boy’s another Winston Churchill!”
Then one day she gets it. She finally sees what was there from Day 1: The lying, the manipulative power trip, the lack of any inherent goodness in his character. It’s usually right around the prom, and she dumps him. The whole school is caught up in the drama, but most shrug it off as the inevitable consequences of immaturity and teenage lust.
Well, it’s happening to President Bush right now. Suddenly the act is wearing thin. Sandra Day O’Connor, one of a handful of people who actually elected the guy for the first term, used the D word recently: Dictatorship.
It was a little shocking and this is a guy who has seen his share of D’s.
Now the Republicans are spinning their change of heart: The goodness in their beings and love of this country, caused them to see President Bush in a positive light, but recent events have forced them to reevaluate their stance for the sake of us all.
Please, spare us the drama. Everything was there to see from the beginning; you just didn’t want to see it. You were caught up in a teenage crush. You had a puppy love affair with the reckless loser in high school and now you want out. They grow up so fast, don’t they?
