The Brokeback Debate: Gays and the Bible

What gets me about the anti-gay thing is that people point to the Bible for justification while ignoring the parts of the scripture they don't like. If anyone looks closely at the Bible, it is packed with behavior that Christians are supposed to follow but don't. And by the way it says, "Whatever I am now commanding you, you must keep and observe, adding nothing to it, taking nothing away."(Deuteronomy: 13:1) But there is not a single Christian on earth who really follows the Bible. Why? Because some of it is primitive, barbaric, and outdated. So if they're okay with overlooking that stuff, why not overlook the anti-gay part, too? No, suddenly they have to follow it to the letter. It's hypocritical and transparent. Meanwhile these ancient religions are not without a downside. Whether it's violence over a cartoon or a President who talks with Jesus before launching a preemptive strike, these books are taking us to the abyss.
Here's some things to remember the next time you're sacrificing an animial to God: (Leviticus 22:24) - "Also anything with its testicles bruised or crushed or torn or cut, you shall not offer to the Lord, or sacrifice in your land." (Deuteronomy 17:1) - "You shall not sacrifice to the Lord your God an ox or a sheep which has a blemish or any defect, for that is a detestable thing to the Lord your God."
Everybody got that straight?
How about this in case someone you know worships a different religion: "Suppose you hear in one of the towns the LORD your God is giving you that some worthless rabble among you have led their fellow citizens astray by encouraging them to worship foreign gods. In such cases, you must examine the facts carefully. If you find it is true and can prove that such a detestable act has occurred among you, you must attack that town and completely destroy all its inhabitants, as well as all the livestock. Then you must pile all the plunder in the middle of the street and burn it. Put the entire town to the torch as a burnt offering to the LORD your God. That town must remain a ruin forever; it may never be rebuilt. Keep none of the plunder that has been set apart for destruction. Then the LORD will turn from his fierce anger and be merciful to you. He will have compassion on you and make you a great nation, just as he solemnly promised your ancestors. The LORD your God will be merciful only if you obey him and keep all the commands I am giving you today, doing what is pleasing to him." (Deuteronomy 13:13-19 NLT)

Come to think of it, it sounds like what we did to Fallujah. Wait, no, we didn't examine the facts carefully first. See? Christians don't follow their own religion. Most of them are moderates, which is another way of saying, "I don't really believe all this stuff is the word of God." Clearly they feel much of the Bible is from another time and no longer applies. Yet they're going to persecute gays over it? Why can't they say that is outdated too? Why is that set in stone? When was the last time you sacrificed an ox?

I'm a Christian and I totally think that Biblical condemnations of homosexuality are outdated. Jesus was a liberal who preached love, forgiveness and commanded us to care for the less fortunate.

Thank you, these comments are very encouraging. I think the keyword for me to the religious fundamentalists here and abroad is "Relax."
Religion shouldn't be used as motivation to hate other people.

Absolutely right. Here's hoping that you can sway Muslim fanatics toward your view - everyone'd be a lot better off.

Wishing you great success!
