Simple Blog Request? Maybe For You

Remember when you were given an assignment and it forced you to admit to something embarrassing? Well, I’m in one of these “7 Favorite Songs Right Now Links” and that’s already going to be embarrassing enough. But the part about linking to 7 other people? I don’t even know how to do that. Maybe it’s for the best. This sort of cyber chain letter sounds like it could lead to trouble anyway. Oh well, here goes:
I’ve been hearing “Rough Justice” by the Rolling Stones since the Super Bowl, specifically the line, “You’re going to have to trust me.”
I also spent part of Super Bowl Sunday morning walking on Mt. Tabor pondering what songs Tom Petty would play if he were the halftime guest. This is actually a very typical level of mental activity for me. I imagined the Heartbreakers surrounded by cheerleaders and rocking to “She was an American girl, raised on promises.” I also thought of “Don’t Do Me Like That” in case the refs were involved in a bad call. Who knew what was to come?
Finally I envisioned parachutists gliding down on the field during “Learning to Fly, but I ain’t got wings. Coming down is the hardest thing.”
Okay, later in the week, a chance reading of some Paul Simon lyrics got me thinking about what songs Simon and Garfunkel would play if they were at the Super Bowl. Do you already detect some pretty shallow thinking on my part? We’re not talking about a mental giant here, folks.
The obvious problem would be avoiding too many low-key grooves. I’d start with “Trying to Keep the Customers Satisfied”: “Deputy sheriff said to me, tell me what you come here for boy? You better pack your bags and flee. You’re in trouble, boy, and now you’re heading into more.”
“Cecelia” rocks but it’s got “dirty” lyrics. I could see “Sounds of Silence” working at the Super Bowl. I also imagined “Bridge Over Troubled Water” as being sort of powerful on a stage like that, although it is pretty long. Then my brain started to hurt so I stopped.
