Reese Witherspoon: Trying to Matter

Reese Witherspoon won tonight and all is well. The more I hear her speak the more impressed I am with the caliber of her being. She’s smart, beautiful and aware. Most of all she’s together.
The last thing this world needs is a clown like me giving my opinion on women in the current public eye, but I think it’s a disaster. Paris Hilton? Lindsay Lohan? And if you think I’m being tough, check out the new song by Pink called “Stupid Girls”. It pretty much makes the same point about the Paris Hiltons of this age. You can almost see the clock turning backwards to another era when women were portrayed as lightweight and inconsequential.
One time a woman in the public eye did something disgraceful, and I was talking about it with my Mom. I mentioned that this guy I had read about had done the same thing. She just said, “Yes, but I expect more from women.” I do too. That’s why I was so happy that Reese Witherspoon won tonight. I just get a very good feeling from her as a smart, solid individual. Reese Witherspoon said she was trying to matter, a line she heard from June Carter. I hope the Paris Hiltons of today's media world heard that comment tonight. It’s not all an obscenely expensive party; try to matter.
